Purpleburst Build-It's Getting Closer!

Post by Bengal65 »

Progress report as requested. Lot's of work left to do!

Image

It's coming along. The guitar is very hard to photograph indoors without proper lighting because of all the pearl in the finish. If you use flash indoors it will look exactly like the Blueburst. Two guitars in one  I had to go outside.

That's only in the sun. There is a lot of pearl in the paint. It reflects a lot of light. If you look at most of Jakes purpleburst photo's they were taken indoors or under stage lighting. Believe me indoors it's much darker. As soon as I can figure out how to photograph it indoors, I'll be sure to post it. I had several expert guitar painters make opinions on preparing this finish after looking a hundreds of photo's.
What's even more interesting is that the almost black edges do not show up in the sun!

Thanks! I've been working on the neck and the infamous "Double Logo". The neck is really cool. It's 1/4 Sawn maple with Ebony board, skunk stripe and abalone inlays. The inlay's are a blue/purple color. Just an awesome match to the finish. Can't wait to get it done! 8)

Hopefully, I can get it done tonight. The body has all been wired up and I have been waiting for my clear coat on my headstock to cure before buffing her out. Doing the double logo was a challenge. More pics soon. 8)

This was done by Charvel on occasion and to artists guitars, I think just to be different. The double logo consists of 2 identical logos, one black and one gold. Depending on the headstock color (usually painted), light or dark in shade, the decals where placed one on top of the other (with a clear coat in between to prevent movement of the first) creating a shadow effect. It's known that this placement was not consistent in whether the shadow was above or below. It was dependent on who at the factory was putting on the decals. Some had at least one of the "Made In USA" and the "TM" cut off and some had both black and gold Made In The USA and TM left on. I'll see if I can dig up some pics and post them later. There was an article in "Guitar For The Practicing Musician" that feature Jake and his Purple and Blue Bursts. (I believe some of the pics from that article are on this site) The photo's show the black decal was placed first, then the gold over the top since both headstocks were dark in color and the gold would show up much better.

Yes, I found some pics in the Photo Gallery. They are in the later Ozzy Gallery. The "I'd Rather Be In Bed" pics. It's hard to see the "shadow", but those headstocks depict the shadow to be below the gold logo. My shadow is going to be above and forward, just to be a little different. I'll have some more detailed shots of other Charvels later.

Ok, here's some pics of the completed guitar minus setup which I have to lower the nut action a few thousands. Not the greatest pics, but I'm working on it. I need a photography class!

I set out to do a tribute guitar and not an exact replica. I used some of my own ideas and specs. So here is the rundown.
Specs:
Body-Alder
Neck-Quartersawn maple Med C shape
Neck Dimensions- .830" at first fret, Compound Radius 10-14".
Tuning Machines-Sperzel
Fingerboard-Ebony Abalone Inlay, Dunlop 6100 fret wire.
No. of Frets-22
Bridge Pickup-DiMarzio Super 3
Neck and Middle-DiMarzio SDS-1
Controls-1 Vol. CTS
Bridge-Fender Import, 2-1/8" string spacing (Fits Fender vintage mounting holes, plus string holes.)
Pickup Switching-5 Position Blade, Switchcraft
Scale length-25-1/2"
Nut Width- 1-11/16",
Nut Material-Graphtech, sorry no phenolic for me, yuck!
Hardware-Gold and Black Plated, Schaller Strap locks
Notes: plays amazingly well for no setup yet. Can get those Jakey palm mute harmonics easily! Light as heck! Hmm, I already thinking it needs a buddy, a "Blueburst"!
